The dosage of Ciprofloxacin tablets is determined on the basis of severity of infection, type of infecting organism and age, weight and renal function of the patient. The recommended dosage is scheduled of oral Ciprofloxacin is as follows: Uncomplicated UTI: 250 mg every 12 hours; Prostatitis and Complicated UTI in patients with severe underlying structural abnormalities: 500 mg every 12 hours; Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Mild – 250mg. Moderate-to- severe: 500 mg every 12 hours Dosage of 750 mg every 12 hours should preferably be used in cases of infection with resistant gram-positive bacteria; Gynecological Infection: 500mg every 12 hours. The dosage should be adjusted in patients with renal impairment. Or as prescribed by the physician.
Ciprofloxacin tablets are indicated for the treatment of a wide variety of infections caused by gram- positive organisms including Pseudomonas. These include respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, surgical infections, bone and joint infections, gynecological infections, gastrointestinal infections, sexually-transmitted diseases, bacteremia, septicemia, and infections in immunocompromised patients.
Hypersensitivity of Ciprofloxacin and other quinolone derivatives. Pregnancy and lactation. Children below the age of 12 years.
To be used with caution in patients with CNS disorders. Dosage to be reduced in patients with impaired kidney function. Concurrent administration of antacids to be avoided. Patients receiving Ciprofloxacin should be well hydrated to prevent crystalluria.
Ciprofloxacin is generally well-tolerated. The commonly reported side effects are diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, restlessness and rash. Other side effects reported very rarely are arthralgia, and increase in serum transaminase level.
Ciprofloxacin absorption when co-administered with magnesium-aluminum antacids. Other cations, such as calcium and probably zinc appear to interact in similar manner. Theophylline serum concentration have been found to be markedly elevated when co-administered with Ciprofloxacin. At doses used for systematic infections, Ciprofloxacin decreases theopylline clearance by approximately 30%. A decreased Ciprofloxacin absorption.
